Television Advertising Watch

Monitoring of television and video advertising: addressable and connected-TV inventory, formats, sales house offers, targeting capabilities, measurement standards and observed campaign activity in the markets you follow.

The problem this service answers

An advertiser wants to know whether addressable television is genuinely available in three markets, in what formats, through which sales houses, and how the delivery is actually verified.

Television advertising is no longer a single mechanism. Linear spots, addressable segments delivered through set-top boxes or connected devices, broadcaster video-on-demand inventory, programmatic buying and sponsorship formats now coexist, each with its own availability, its own targeting capability and its own measurement basis, and none of that is uniform across territories.

For advertisers and agencies, the practical consequence is that a plan built on assumptions from one market may be unbuildable in another. For sales houses and broadcasters, the risk is the opposite: discovering that a competitor has launched a capability the market now expects as standard.

What the assignment covers

This service follows the advertising side of television and video in the territories you designate: which inventory and formats actually exist, which sales houses or platforms control them, what targeting and frequency capabilities are genuinely deployed, how delivery is measured and verified, and which commercial structures are being introduced, tested or withdrawn.

It also covers observed campaign activity where that is useful. Seeing which advertisers are present in a genre, in which formats, at which times and around which programmes gives a concrete reading of how a category is actually investing, and is frequently far more informative than any stated media strategy.

Measurement is treated as a subject in its own right. Addressable delivery, connected-television inventory and streaming advertising are counted on different bases from linear spots, and the currencies used to trade them are being revised in several markets at the same time. We describe what each figure actually represents before any comparison is attempted.

How we work on it

  1. We agree on the territories, media environments and advertiser categories to be followed.
  2. Available inventory, formats and targeting capabilities are documented sales house by sales house.
  3. Commercial announcements, product launches and partnership arrangements are monitored continuously.
  4. Measurement and verification arrangements are described, including their scope and known limitations.
  5. Where relevant, campaign presence is observed within the defined genres and environments.
  6. Findings are consolidated into a market reading and updated on the agreed cycle.

Where the information comes from

Sources are selected with you at the start of the assignment and reviewed as the subject evolves.

  • Sales house commercial documentation, format specifications and published offer structures.
  • Broadcaster and platform announcements on advertising products and inventory.
  • Industry bodies and measurement organisations publishing standards, currencies and methodological notes.
  • Trade media covering advertising sales and technology in the relevant markets.
  • Observed campaign presence in the environments and genres defined in the perimeter.

Possible deliverables

The format is chosen with you. A single assignment can combine several of them.

  • A market-by-market description of available inventory, formats and targeting capabilities.
  • Alerts on new advertising products, partnerships and measurement changes.
  • A recurring bulletin on the advertising environment in your perimeter.
  • A comparative view of sales house offers on criteria agreed in advance.
  • A note on measurement arrangements and what each currency does and does not capture.

Who this service is designed for

  • Advertisers and their in-house media teams
  • Media agencies and trading desks
  • Sales houses and broadcaster commercial departments
  • Advertising technology providers assessing market conditions
  • Institutions and industry bodies observing advertising market structure

What this service does not promise

We describe publicly documented offers, formats and measurement arrangements. We do not audit deliveries. Negotiated commercial conditions, individual campaign performance and confidential trading terms are outside this scope.

How to start

Tell us which markets and media environments matter to you, and whether your question concerns availability, measurement or competitive activity. We will scope the perimeter accordingly.

Questions about this service

Do you provide advertising expenditure figures?

We report published estimates and state which organisation produced them and on what basis. Methodologies differ substantially between providers and territories, so we present figures with their source rather than merging them into a single number that would obscure those differences.

Can you cover connected television and streaming advertising together with linear?

Yes, and it is usually necessary. Budgets increasingly move between these environments, and understanding availability in one without the others gives a distorted view. We do, however, keep their measurement bases clearly separated in every deliverable.

Is this service useful for a sales house rather than an advertiser?

It is, with a different orientation. Sales houses generally use it to follow competing offers, format innovation and measurement developments across markets, particularly to anticipate capabilities that advertisers will soon expect as a baseline rather than as a differentiator.

Tell us what you need to monitor

Describe your subject, your markets and your decision timeline. We study every request individually before proposing a monitoring set-up.

Every request is reviewed confidentially. No commitment is required to discuss a scope of work.
